Princess Diana
Diana Spencer, born in 1961, became Princess Diana when she married Charles III in 1981. Because he was Queen Elizabeth II's oldest child, Charles III was at the time the heir to the British monarchy. Upon Elizabeth II's death in 2022, Charles became the King of the United Kingdom.
Prince Charles was 32 years-old when he married Diana. She was 20 years-old and had only exited her teen years a few weeks before the internationally covered wedding took place. This was just one of the reasons Diana was such an intrigue to people around the world. Princess Diana became an icon not just in the UK but globally. The press followed her everywhere, and her youthful good looks, charisma, and charity were well known to millions of admirers.
Diana's celebrity only rose after she became a British royal, but by 1986, the royal marriage was in doubt. Paparazzi followed Diana everywhere and were able to uncover both the Prince and Princess having extramarital affairs. Though her social life and charity remained center stage, speculation about a royal divorce were an equal press fixation. That speculation became a reality when Charles and Diana divorced in 1996.
The divorce did not end the media's fascination with Diana.
Princess Diana died in a car crash on August 31, 1997. Her driver, Henri Paul, and a 3rd passenger, Dodi Al Fayed also died in the car crash. Along with an outpouring of grief, speculation about the car crash came swiftly. Diana was a relatively modest teenager from Wales when she married into the royal family, but over time, her fame outshined her husband and the Windsor dynasty itself in many ways. Tensions mounted within the rocky marriage as years went on. In late 1995, Diana spoke openly against Charles III's character publicly before divorcing him, which was itself a scandal.
Dodi Al Fayed was an Egyptian film producer and the son of billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed. Henri Paul's autopsy showed that he had high levels of drugs and alcohol in his system. No members of the press were ever jailed for the crash. These are all factors in conspiracies about the death of Princess Diana. Did the British royal family plot to silence her for overshadowing them and leaving the future King? Were they angry that she was dating Al Fayed, an Egypitan and Islamic royal through his father's wealth and prominence? Britain's history of colonization is a factor in this portion of the conspiracy. Finally, is it possible that Paul was drugged or the paparazzi was out for more than "a scoop," but for murder?
